1 French Bulldogs
In 2012, French Bulldogs ranked at 14th on the list of the most popular breeds in the nation. After jumping to the number 2 spot in 2021, the playful breed took the top spot in 2022 and has remained there since! Check out our breed spotlight on this breed here.
2 Labrador Retrievers
Having held the title of the most popular dog breed in America for more than three decades, these lively, all-American dogs had the longest reign of any breed. They were demoted back in 2022 by the Frenchie, but hold strong in 2nd place!
3 Golden Retrievers
A friendly, playful sporting dog, the Golden Retriever is eager, alert, self-confident, and should be very active and energetic. This breed is slow to mature, retaining puppy personality for up to three or four years, which many humans find endearing! They are loyal and beautiful, but the list of attributes contributing to their immense popularity is long! Check out or breed spotlight on this breed here.
4 German Shepherds
Highly intelligent, seriously loyal, and known for dignity and stature, they can run at great speeds and are fierce defenders of human and their home. Despite their popularity, they are likely suited to a smaller portion of the population than they actually belong to. They can be a handful, being energetic and strong-willed. Check out our breed spotlight on this breed here.
5 Poodles
The national dog of France was likely originally a hunting dog from Germany (there is some debate). They're good swimmers with waterproof coats, perfect for duck hunting. Their signature fancy haircut is actually a practical protection for joints and vital organs in cold water. Highly adaptable, it is no surprise they are so popular! Check out our breed spotlight on this breed here.
This list is determined annually using AKC registration data. The top five has been unchanged since 2022.
